Mini Koga SD2

BACKGROUND I have a background in various styles of martial arts, American Eclectic, Japanese, and Korean styles. I was looking for a self defense tool that can be portable enough for daily carry and for overseas safety. This mini Koga is made of polymer and is quite dense which will aid in defense counterstrikes and submissions. It is essentially, a polymer Yawara or contoured Kubotan. The contoured handles give a solid but positive control with excellent retention. It can be used as a striking tool with a hammer fist or the end can be grabbed and used as a small baton. The matte black finish is anti-glare, and carry is inconspicuous. With proper techniques, this can and will break bones and can cause severe internal injuries = the user must be made aware of its potential dangers to the recipient. PRACTICALITIES The blunted ends help with pressure point/submissions. The ends can easily break bones and cause severe muscular contusions. A user must exercise great caution. Proper training is necessary to utilize this to its potential. Even if thrown, this will cause serious injury. There are no build in holes to allow for carry on a keychain but a lanyard can be attached to allow for an efficient draw. This is 7/8th the length and half of the diameter of the Koga SD1 self defense tool. I have both. Frequently, I carry both with the dominant hand controlling the SD2, and the SD1 serving as a blunt force tool to maximize striking from a non-dominant hand. Cold Steel's SD-2 Mini Koga is the little brother to the larger SD-1 stick. It's smaller and less bulky, and has pointier ends than it the SD-1. It's made of very sturdy plastic and should be largely indestructible when used in the manner that it was designed for. It's also small and light enough that it shouldn't be a chore to add it to your EDC rotation. My one criticism is that the plastic it's made from is rather slippery. Yes, it's got molded finger grooves and some light texturing to help offset this, but it's still not as grippable as I'd like. I would suggest adding some grip tape or rosin to the handle to enhance the grip if you buy one of these. This is useful for those times when you can't carry something better, or as an extra layer in your personal protection system. It also gives you a low-intensity option for those times when you don't want to use the more potent alternatives. You'll need to be reasonable with your expectations when you use a tool of this sort. It's not going to stop a grizzly bear in its tracks or turn you into CHUCK NORRIS.

Very lightweight and small, though I found the ribs on the handle to be a bit uncomfortable. Seems to be very durable and will be a very nice addition to my collection.

The mini koga makes an excellent pocket stick. It is very light, and easily concealable. The fit and finish and mine are excellent, I have one that has barely noticeable mold lines. They do not effect the grip, which is designed to allow on to get a very firm grasp. This weapon is a top notch self defense device. It is less than lethal, and yet it is mean enough that several rapid and authoritative jabs/hammer strikes would discourage a determined attacker. The tips, being that they come to a narrow point, amplify the pounds per square inch of force that occurs from each strike. Hitting an assailant in the eye, temple, or throat with this could cause debilitating permanent injuries. getting struck anywhere with it is not a treat, even light jabs during sparring are difficult to absorb. Aside from it's use as a striker, this weapon is also useful as a pain-compliance device. Add it to joint locks and head locks, and this thing will cause an aggressor to tap before the fight even begins. At such a low price, this makes an excellent less than lethal option to boot knives and last ditch knives that are currently being sold. With a fair chance of stopping an attacker but less of a chance of causing serious permanent injuries, the mini koga offers a fair but devastating alternative. It fits easily into pants pockets, and is easily and quickly deployed. As a final note, because it has more acute points, this pocket stick/yawara is more suitable for a beginner or someone less trained. Their simple jabs, hammer strikes, and roundhouses will be more devastating than with a traditional blunt cylinder style of kubaton. Stay safe and be watchful, -The Watchman

Really happy with the purchase. Durable small light weight. The groves in the middle allow you to switch grips much quicker. By having tips on both sides it has more penetrating potential. It is black which means an attacker may not be able to see it in the dark. The tips also allow you to adjust how long the tip will protrude in your hand much easier. The groove right before the tip reduces finger and thumb friction when sliding up or down the instrument. The grooves in the middle can help secure the device applying finger or wrist pressure to an aggressor. The side grooves also increase pressure on the back of the hand when pressed against the bones of the back of the hand. I tapped the ulna and radial one at the wrist with the side of the device and it wasn't nearly as painful as plastic or metal tends to be. However the tip tapping the same areas hurts quite a bit.

Don't be fooled by the "mini" in Mini Koga: This thing will fit everything but the beefiest of mechanics' hands. The polymer it's made from actually lives up to the often-mocked Cold Steel assurance of indestructability. To wit: it can easily break uncooked pork ribs with the right angle of attack, and will rupture the rind of any pumpkin or squash with relative ease. All of this with negligible marring of the Koga's surface. I'm sure you could translate such results to a self-defense situation. But since this is Canada, and merely suggesting you intend to use a plastic stick in such a way could land you in jail, I'll just say that it's a perfect "kitchen mashing utensil".
