Simple, small, functional, what more do we need?
The metal cased TP-Link 8 port Gigabit TL-SG108 1000/100/10 switch works perfectly straight out of the box. No set-up is required. It auto-senses the cable connection and interfaces correctly to both T568A and T568B wiring of the cables, so there is no need for 'crossover' leads. The power supply is a small 9V plug-top unit that barely thinks about getting warm. Measured current from a 9V bench power supply was 85mA (765mW) with no ports connected, rising to 120mA (1080mW) all ports connected but no traffic, during a 7GByte 1000Mb/s backup between two long-wire ports the current peaked at roughly 230mA (~2W) but varied. Much, much better than the old 100/10 hub it replaces which always took about 350mA (~2.6W) at 7.5V 24/7 and also had an inefficient hot mains brick. The LED lights on the front edge, two adjacent to each of the eight sockets indicate activity in the normal way; solid for connected and flashing for data transfer, the green LED for 1000Mb/s and the yellow LED for 100/10Mb/s. There is also a separate green LED showing when the power is correct. I would have preferred the lights to be on the other side from all of the leads as with the version (9.0) of the TP-Link SF1005D (not shown on Az now) I bought in 2012, or on the top as with this version TP-Link SF1005D I bought in 2011, but I understand why it was done here. A couple of keyhole slots in the base of the metal box enable one to mount it on a pair of no6 countersink-head woodscrews to allow tidy routing of the cables. The four rubber feet help to prevent it from sliding off the screws. The 8 port box is 100mm x 160mm x 28mm. My house usually has no wi-fi; the CAT5E LAN is all hard-wired and this new switch living next to the big PC, a media server and the network printer, replaces a previous and out-of-date 100/10Mb/s generic unit from Maplin. The network is mixed traffic, mostly Gigabit, but still some old 100Mb/s Ethernet. The new switch handles it all at full duplex with no problems, and I have noticed a slight increase in the speed of the 100Mb/s transfers as well. I bought this after several months of positive experience with its little brother the TL-SG105 and the TD-W8970 router . As usual, I took the lid off to have a look inside (my work used to include designing high speed electronics) and it is nicely made with good quality components and proper attention to screening and track layout. Recommended. Addendum. Be aware that on this product page either Az or TP-Link has stupidly mixed up all the reviews for all the different varieties of TP Link switches, 24, 16, 8 and 5 port, Gigabit or not, metal and several versions of plastic cases, even for switches no longer available, and they have different performance and best uses. But cut to the chase, and simply go for the latest versions of the metal boxed Gigabit switches.

Gotta love TP-Link
Great value and seems to perform well. One star less on durability as it's TP-Link so will break in 3 years. I will come back and correct this if it's still going in 2021. Update 2019/05/25 The Pro version of this has a WebUI TP-Link TL-SG108E (Firstly I've not done this yet but it looks easy enough) They call this an 'unmanaged' switch but actually it has a WebUI and you can do some smart things with this like VLANs and Link Aggregation. If you don't want these fancy features then save your money and buy a cheaper 1gig switch, it will work just as well. The switch actually has an internal bandwidth of 16gig even though the ports are only 1gig. The reason for this is that each port can handle 1gbs in and 1gbs out at the same time and there are 8 of them. This means your PC can drag a file from the server and dump it on your PC at 1gbs speed but effectively using 2gbs of bandwith since two ports are running at 1gbs. So what would happen if you could use two Ethernet ports at once connected to your PC and two connected to your server? Well you would have 2gbs LAN speed!!! It's called LAG Link Aggregation 802.3ad and is under the Switch section of the WebUI of the TP-Link. You can have two groups. Add two ports to one group and two ports to the other. Then on the Linux server and PC you've got to BOND two ports together but the drivers are already built into the Kernel. Plenty of stuff online how to do that. You might just use an aggregated connection to your server so that it can handle two people using 1gbs. For £27 this is a seriously smart switch.

It just works, without hassle, without pain. All is good with this little netgear.
Does exactly what its supposed to. No frills, no weird setup discs or complicated config. Well made and sturdy, very little to go wrong and its cheap as chips, what more can you ask for in a switch at this price.

superb product
The TP-Link 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (TL-SG108) is a total game-changer for anyone looking to expand their home network. I recently picked one up, and it's been a game-changer for me! With its eight Gigabit Ethernet ports, I can easily connect all my devices, from my smart TV to my gaming console, with lightning-fast speeds. The steel case feels super durable, and I love that it can be mounted on the wall or placed on my desk. Setting it up was a breeze - just plug and play, no configuration required. If you're in need of more Ethernet ports for your home network, I highly recommend the TP-Link TL-SG108!

Great switch and great value
I have a few switches around my house all gigabit as most of my devices are now gigabit enabled I want give my devices the best connection possible. I have tp link gigabit powerline plugs around my house also to link in with the switches and this all works flawlessly. This tp link 8 port switch works great and is built with aluminium too not some plastic rubbish which we have all come to expect from new products nowadays. This switch can can take your normal rj45 cables via the front or if you pop the cover off you can wire the cables directly to rear. The lights do only light green to show a valid data connection but be assured if your device is gigabit enabled th switch will passing the connection through at gigabit speeds. I used to be skeptical of lesser known brands but tp link have proven to be very reliable ( no failures with powerline plugs in two years) and I now have faith in their brand. My network consists of a few cables computers, a fire-tv two xbox one consoles, three xbox 360 consoles, a media centre, two smart tv's and other wireless devices that connect to my netgear x6 R8000 router that distributes the dhcp to all devices in the house I have some with fixed ips to simplify setup of media items. My network works great and I have never had a streaming problem with hd content to several devices at the same time with these switches. Grab one and give it a go next time you need to add capacity to your own network.

Switched on.
I wanted a switch which allowed me to update all of my cables to CAT7 and hopefully speed up my internet access without me having to monitor it. This fit fitted the bill perfectly and worked straight out of the box. No need to plug it into your computer and set up and it monitors itself and could not be simpler. After installing and connecting I carried out a speed test on my broadband using an internet based checker have noticed an 8-10mbs speed increase. I also have a Fire TV stick connected via the new adapter, so as not to rely on a WiFi signal, and watching movies etc appears to be smoother. No noise on operation as there is no fan which is ideal where it is situated. Well worth what I paid and considering the high build quality of the unit.

Easy to Use and Great Price
Sometimes you just need more ports. As more and more devices become connected to the internet sometimes the 4 spaces on your typical WiFi router are just not going to cut it. My additional requirement was for near my TV so it had to be small and just work. Thankfully this product lived up to that requirement easily. The switch seems to have a very high build quality and it was just a case of attaching all the Ethernet cables from the various devices (TV, Sonos, PS4, Amp, Sky box and more!) and then one more to the Wifi router. Turn in on and voila, everything was up and running in minutes. It has been rock solid too, my other switch occasionally needs a reboot but this one has not missed a beat. I also did a speedtest by plugging in a laptop directly into the router and again into the switch and there was no noticeable drop in upload / download speeds. If there is an overhead to using this switch then it is very small. I know that a lot of devices can be connected to the Wifi network but my preference is to hard wire them to the network when it is practical to do so, especially for gaming / video streaming devices. This switch has been a great buy!
