Does the lid slam shut, or quietly lower down?

It slams down, but it has been working very well so far.

How tall is this trashcan when the lid is open?

About 2inches below my kitchen counter. It fits perfectly in the kitchen. I love it.

Do four D2 batteries work or does it have to be four size D batteries?

Not getting into the materials that can vary in making batteries, but a D size battery is a set size and is rated at 1.5 volts. Companies that package batteries, typically call their 2 packs of D size D2. The four pack is called D4.
