The Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics Paperback

I have utilized this Manual throughout the decades since the late 1970s and have ALWAYS found it to be authoritative, helpful, useful and reasonably priced. Using it is how I learned to calculate IV fluid replacement. There is one and only one glitch I have found in this text and that’s regarding the calculation of the Henderson-Hasselbach Equation. For DECADES the formula for pH of the weak acid H2CO3 as shown in the Manual is WRONG!! The solubility constant for CO2 is 0.03 and the Manual in EVERY Edition has it as 0.3 in the formula pH = pKa + log [HCO3-]/0.3 x pCO2 where pKa = 6.1. The 0.3 should be 0.03. I don’t know how this slips by the Chief Resident’s eye EVERY year of publication. UNLESS the process for updating this Manual is analogous to the quality assurance program they had at McDonald’s decades ago where Your Meal was triple checked for accuracy prior to its delivery to You!! Kinda like the QA process of Boeing in its manufacturing of the 737 MAX 9

Many years ago I had a much smaller version of this book as an intern. Was never without it. It necessarily has become a bigger work. I miss the spiral binding. The font is too small for my aging eyes, but I understand larger font would make the book even bigger. A huge plus is the purchase enables you to download the book to your computer and other devices. I am an Apple user and the book is now on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. In those locations the font is larger and very easy to read. The book will probably remain at home for most and they will use their portable device for reference.

I use this book daily as an internal medicine resident. I recently used it during two weeks of overnight admissions, and it was easy to quickly find the relevant information to create management plans. Online activation worked fine for me. Also no missing pages in the physical copy, though the back cover was a little wrinkled during shipping. Overall highly recommended.

Readable comprehensive guide for inpatient internal medicine is massive but compact and well bound. It gets right to the point! However the index is incomplete and numerous subjects discussed in the book are not listed In the index. However the included electronic version Is fully searchable, hyperlinked, scrolls nicely, and is an delightfully unexpected add-on to this essential guide.

Obviously I haven't read it yet it's a medical manual. But I am sure it will be quite informative.

This is the book for medical information.

Great book with a lot of information for a new nurse practitioner hospitalist. The font is a little small but still easy to read. It's broken down in sections and for each diagnosis, you have the general information behind it, patho, any additional info, diagnosis, clinical presentation, testing and treatment.
